URALAZ is a manufacturer of heavy all-terrain trucks adapted to severe climatic conditions. Established in 1942, it is located in Miass, a city 130 kilometers east of Chelyabinsk, the southernmost major Russian city in the Urals region. Chelyabinsk is two hours by air from Moscow.URALAZ was established when the Moscow Truck Factory was relocated by Stalin's order in anticipation of Hitler's invasion of Russia. Unlike most automotive manufacturers in the former Soviet union, URALAZ is a moderate size plant, with peak production in the early 1990's of 30,000 vehicles per year. The plant has a reputation for quality products, and has successfully shifted its client base from the military - its primary customer until 1992 - to oil and gas, forest products, and agricultural companies. Current annual production is 8,000 - 9,000 vehicles.
The plant covers approximately five square miles and includes two assembly lines, a foundry, numerous metalworking shops, and its own power generating facility. The Main Building, constructed in 1980, contains the new assembly line, metalworking lines, chassis assembly, and cab assembly under a joint venture agreement.
TDR International, Inc., a subsidiary of URALAZ - USA, based in Florida is the official distributor of URALAZ products. The company provides service and parts distribution from the Free Trade Zone facilities in Miami. TDR International, Inc. is responsible for developing new marketing and distribution network, creating joint ventures with local truck dealers and agencies.
Joint Ventures
URALAZ has established two Western joint ventures. The first is with IVECO, the heavy truck division of FIAT and Gazprom, the Russian integrated natural gas supplier. IVECO and URALAZ began discussions in 1991, and created the joint venture in 1994. The Three parties own equal shares. Total capitalization is 32,000,000.
The joint venture strategy has three components:
- Manufacture of cabs. In a leased space in the Main Assembly Building, the joint venture stamps, presses, welds, assembles and paints truck cabs produced under IVECO license. All equipment necessary to create a full cab is now in place.
- Manufacture of chassis. Side members for the full chassis will be produced in Magnitogorsk, and assembly of the chassis will occur at URALAZ.
- Axles. Production of axles either under and IVECO license or with a local axle manufacturer is planned for 1998 or later.
URALAZ also assembles the MAGIRUS truck, a vehicle produced under license from a European IVECO subsidiary. A separate joint venture truck chassis assembly facility is being completed nearby, with 3,000 unit annual capacity.
A second joint venture was signed this summer with Klockner Humboldt Dietz, a German diesel engine manufacturer.
